Philosophy
Passion and attention to detail are the hallmarks of John Fought Design (JFD). No golf course designer spends more time with his client during the planning process and on site during the construction phase of the project than John.
The same passion that propelled John to victory in the 1977 U.S. Amateur Championship and to his two PGA Tour wins, has been transferred to the golf courses he designs. With four courses in the “Top 100” (Golfweek – Modern) and many national championships being contested on his courses, it is fair to say that John is currently one of the foremost architects working today.
From a philosophical standpoint John has played most of the great courses throughout the world and understands the design styles of the past and present designers. John prefers the classic works from the Golden Age of golf course architecture when such geniuses as Donald Ross, Alistair Mackenzie and AW Tillinghast were creating their master works. While John does not have a dominant motif present in every course he designs (changes occur from project to project to fit the land and circumstances), his style leans toward classic, created with modern construction techniques.
Planning Process
All of John Fought Design plans are generated with computer aided drafting (CAD), including the grading, cut and fill and drainage, as well as detailed greens plans that are monitored in the field during construction. These plans are easily interlinked with the project engineer and land planners so as to provide a seamless process. Likewise, this process provides a solid foundation during the bid and construction process. It is the norm for JFD projects to be completed within 5% of original budget.
Construction Phase
In an age when golf course architects are more salesmen than artists, John spends many weeks on the road traveling from site to site to inspect the work he is responsible for planning. It is not unusual for John to visit the site every week, rain or shine, to stay on top of the small details that make a golf course great. Notes and sketches are provided to document the construction process. Owners never worry about finding John, as he is there to work hand-in-hand with other partners to get the product right - the first time. This operating philosophy saves money and time and provides the best possible golf course for the least amount of investment capital.
